Jorge Espino Jorge Espino is a graduate of the Conservatorio Nacional de Música in Mexico and the Academy of Vocal Arts and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He joined the ensemble of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in the autumn 2019 after one season at the opera studio. What’s your dream role and why? Choosing just one would be difficult but for my top three choices at the moment I would name Figaro, Giovanni, and Rigoletto. I have already sung Giovanni and I am currently singing Figaro in Düsseldorf. I appreciate interesting stories, interesting characters, and good music above all. Who is your favourite singer and why? Although I listen to many other operatic baritones constantly such as Cappuccilli, Bastianini and Warren, Dmitri Hvorostovsky comes always first in my mind because I was lucky enough to hear him live, and I was impressed by his way of communing and his elegant singing. What to you hope to achieve by participating in the Queen Sonja International Music Competition? Since this is a competition, I certainly want to win, but beyond that, I want my voice to be heard, to be able to create music and to enjoy the whole experience. What kind of demands to you believe the future’s opera singers must fulfill to make a career? The truth is that while there are many fashions in the opera business that we may like or dislike, being yourself and identifying what makes you special is far more interesting to the audience.
