Ogulcan Yilmaz Bass-baritone, Turkey "I had no questions in my mind anymore. I decided to continue towards my dream job." What inspired you to become a singer? My father is also an opera singer and he was my first teacher. He never forced me to become an opera singer, but I think because of how I grew into this profession, I became interested in becoming an artist too. What’s your dream role and why? My dream roles are Don Giovanni (for the near future) and Baron Scarpia (for the future). Because they have big personalities and huge passions about what they are doing in their lives. The most important thing is they believe in their truths and that they can afford to die for them. Who is your favourite singer and why? My favourite singer is Bryn Terfel. Because he is an amazing singer, but he is also an amazing actor. What do you hope to achieve by participating in The Queen Sonja International Music Competition? I just want to deliver my best possible performances. If I am convinced by my own performance, I will be happy. After that, the rest will depend on the jury members' taste and decisions. What kind of demands do you believe the future’s opera singers must fulfill to make a career? I think first of all we have to enjoy and like what we are doing and then we have to convince the audience by what we are doing on stage. Is there anything else you would like to tell us, which might be interesting to the public? In August 2017 I was planning to take an exam for Turkish Airlines' pilot school, and I missed the language exams and application deadline. I thought I could do it the following year, but I applied for Bayerische Staatsoper’s opera studio auditions and they invited me for the live auditions in January 2018. After they chose me for the opera studio, I had no questions in my mind anymore. I decided to continue towards my dream job.
