Josy Santos Mezzo-soprano, Brazil “I hope to go beyond my limits and leave this contest with even more knowledge about music, love and dedication.” What inspired you to become a singer? My family and my friends. I started to sing as a joke with my brother, then along the trajectory of my life I found friends and mentors who supported and encouraged me in my career. What’s your dream role and why? My dream role is Charlotte from Werther. To me, it is the most beautiful music. It is so well composed with so much passion! And it's an incredible story, based on a book by Goethe that influenced a generation and created a new style in the arts. Who is your favourite singer and why? I love Jessye Norman. She was the first purely classical singer I heard. The naturalness of how she sings, the passion and surrender that she puts into music - it is quite unbelievable. What do you hope to achieve by participating in The Queen Sonja International Music Competition? I hope to go beyond my limits and leave this contest with even more knowledge about music, love and dedication. Tell us something surprising or unexpected about yourself! I'm learning to love football!! What kind of demands do you believe the future’s opera singers must fulfill to make a career? I believe the world of music is becoming more and more demanding. The aesthetics and physical appearance has been essential when we talk about opera singers. Besides a perfect knowledge of the most sung languages, French, Italian, German and English, the public increasingly expect a thorough understanding of the language. And on top of it all, a solid technique.
