Jeongmeen Ahn Baritone, South Korea “Vocalists should know how to add colors to their voice like a painter, instead of just making sound.” What inspired you to become a singer? Since I was young, I have liked to sing in front of people, and I would always sing along to songs on the car radio. However, right before entering middle school, my parents said: “Why don’t you stop going to the song academy? You should be a doctor.”. I told them that I could not do it. I had no interest in anything but singing, and decided to become a vocalist. What’s your dream role and why? Papageno is my dream role. In fact, I have performed it three times, and I will continue to desire that role till I get old. In the process of preparing for an opera, singers usually try to take after the role in their daily lives. When preparing for Papageno, I felt my greedless and pure attitude toward music. I was really happy at that time. Who is your favourite singer and why? I like Thomas Hampson and Christian Gerhaher the most. I think that vocalists should know how to add colors to their voice like a painter, instead of just making sound. These two vocalists know how to focus the depth of emotion in their singing – they showed me the music of my dreams. What do you hope to achieve by participating in The Queen Sonja International Music Competition? Preparing for this competition, I have thought a lot about how I could show my everything about music. To become a great singer, I think that I should renew myself for every new round and song. That is something I hope to take with me from this competition.
