Dongwon Kang Tenor, South Korea “Opera is visual and musical arts, not only singing. Expressing the character's role is really important.” What inspired you to become a singer? When I was a high school student, I really loved to listen to pop music. One of my friends were studying opera and he recommended me to listen to an audio file, and the magnificent introduction of the song shocked me. Since that day, I listened more to opera than pop music, and started to learn the art of opera. Finally, I'm here! What's your dream role and why? The song that made me start singing was 'Fra poco a me ricovero' from the opera Lammermoor di Lucia. This song made me want to become an opera singer, so it naturally became my dream role. Who is your favorite singer and why? My favorite singer is Jussi Bjorling. I had been struggling with my singing, and my professor recommended me to listen Jussi Bijorling's singing, and it really helped me a lot to overcome that period. What do you hope to achieve by participating in The Queen Sonja International Music Competition? I want to show the world of Tenor Dongwon Kang, and I want to sing all around the world. What kind of demands do you believe the future's opera singers must fulfill to make a careeer? First of all, singers should always love music. Opera is visual and musical arts, not only singing. Expressing the character's role is really important.
