Deng Chao Bass-baritone, China "I hope to meet new people – they may be my colleagues in the future." What inspired you to become a singer? Throughout my childhood, my parents have nurtured my singing hobby. My hobby from the age of six, has now become my profession – singing opera. What’s your dream role and why? I have several dream roles, such as Figaro and Scarpia. The character of Figaro is interesting, and the role showcases the different abilities of the singer. Scarpia is so attractive. Especially "Te Deum" in the first act, sung together with the choir, is so mind blowing! Who is your favourite singer and why? Luciano Pavarotti. The first CD I had in my life was his. His voice is so charming that I want to become a singer like him. What do you hope to achieve by participating in The Queen Sonja International Music Competition? I hope to show myself on the international stage! I hope to meet new people – they may be my colleagues in the future. Tell us something surprising or unexpected about yourself! If I can win an award in the Competition, that will be my surprise. What kind of demands do you believe the future’s opera singers must fulfill to make a career? First of all, we must love the opera. We must have talent, be very diligent,act well, and be good with technology in order to promote ourselves.
