Lauren Fagan Soprano, Australia «I have a golden retriever, back at home in Sydney, that cries and howls whenever I try to practice my singing.» What inspired you to become a singer? It was a gradual progression from the desire to be on stage, then finding that I had an operatically suited voice, and quickly falling in love with the art form. What’s your dream role and why? Violetta. The role is very open to personal dramatic interpretation, and involves so many different emotions and vocal colours - not to mention the music being incredible! I can only assume it must be a role that takes a soprano on a huge emotional journey every time they sing it. Who is your favourite singer and why? If I had to choose one singer, I would say Mirella Freni. She has a voice of sheer beauty and indescribable emotional engagement with everything I’ve ever heard her sing. She is an inspiration for me. What do you hope to achieve by participating in The Queen Sonja International Music Competition? I am looking forward to having a chance to sing pieces that are close to my heart for a panel of very important people. I’m also looking forward to meeting other young opera singers from around the world! Tell us something surprising or unexpected about yourself! I ran last year’s London marathon in under 3 hours and 30 minutes. I have a golden retriever, back at home in Sydney, that cries and howls whenever I try to practice my singing.
