Ildo Song Bass, South Korea «My first part was actually a tenor role. Now I sing bass.» What inspired you to become a singer? When I was in elementary school I went to a tenor’s recital, and heard some of his repertoire. From that moment my dream of becoming an opera singer began. What’s your dream role and why? My dream role is Filippo II [in Verdi's Don Carlo]. Filippo's music really expresses his situation and the role gives the opportunity to show a range of musical and dramatic elements. Who is your favourite singer and why? My favourite singer is Phillip Kang. He is an amazing Wagnerian singer, especially when he sang the role of Hagen in Götterdämmerung at the Bayreuth Festival, and he is also my singing coach in Korea. He has taught me a lot about the art of singing and the attitude towards music required. What do you hope to achieve by participating in The Queen Sonja International Music Competition? I hope to show the glory of Jesus Christ, because God is the focus of my life. Tell us something surprising or unexpected about yourself! My first part was actually a tenor role. Now I sing bass. Is there anything else you would like to tell us, which might be interesting to the public? I will be part of the ensemble at the Zurich opera house next season.
