1) What inspired you to become a singer?
I was born in a family of opera singers. My mother and aunt are both sopranos, and my father also was an opera singer. My parents actually met each other on stage, during a production of Pelléas et Mélisande in which my father sang Pelléas and my mother Mélisande! He now runs a company in Toulouse and makes his own shows. My mother, who is Danish, came to France to do her singing studies at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris – where I also did mine.
I sang in children choirs (in Belgium and then in Lyon) from the age of 6 until I was 17. This gave me the opportunity to sing in many operas like Bohème, Die Zauberflöte, Werther, Turandot, Carmen etc... I actually spent all my “free time” on the stage or behind the scene with my mother!
2) What's your dream role and why?
This is a complicated question, because I have many dream roles! Right now I am very interested in Salome by Strauss. I am fascinated by this young woman and also by Strauss's music. Unfortunately this role is not often given to young singers but I hope I have the chance to sing it within the next 10 years! ;-)
3) Who is your favorite opera singer and why?
Oh that is also complicated! I can give you 5 of my favorites: Maria Callas, René Fleming, Mariella Devia, Anna Netrebko and Leontyne Price. But my idol is Maria Callas. Nobody can make me feel the music like she does. And the woman, her life, her choices... I admire her a lot! I can't explain (and I am not the only one) why she has this “magnetic” presence on the stage...
4) What do you hope to achieve by participating in the Queen Sonja International Music Competition?
I want to confront myself with the singing environment, to see where I am in my construction compared to other young singers. I also hope to have some good or constructive feedback from the jury that we help me make my way into the opera world!
5) Tell us something surprising or unexpected about yourself!
I am a very normal person with normal tastes! I was perhaps more surprising when I was little because the only music I listenined to was classical music. I could almost sing the whole Magic Flute from the beginning to the end at the age of 5. It was, and still is, one of my favorite operas.
6) Is there anything else you would like to tell us, which might be interesting to the public?
I've just been accepted to the Berlin Staatsoper opera studio which I'm going to start in September. During the next season I will also make my debut as Rosina in Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini at the Clermont Ferrand opera. I can't wait!
