Dear participants, dear audience
Welcome to The Queen Sonja International Music Competition 2017!
International music competitions have always operated as a three-way partnership between artists, music institutions and audiences. The dynamic of this triumvirate is always changing - thankfully! Those of us who engage in this discourse must strive to address the challenge of one of the music business’ most pressing questions: What demands and expectations do today’s audiences and music institutions have of future performers of classical music?
As a competition we do everything we can to be a relevant and attractive partner for all concerned. More than anything else it is important for us that our participants are given the best possible conditions to allow them to perform at their best.
QSIMC is a huge collaborative effort. Our position amongst the top music competitions in the world is due to the collective involvement of several of the country's leading institutions. The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation and the Norwegian Academy of Music all contribute invaluable expertise and considerable resources to the project. Many thanks to all of the staff involved.
We are also extremely grateful to the public and private donors who make it possible for us to maintain high ambitions in regard to both artistic quality and international impact.
Particular thanks go to H.M. Queen Sonja and The Royal Court. For nearly 30 years H.M. Queen Sonja has been generously and actively involved in the Competition’s work. We hope that the exceptional performances from some of the world’s most talented young singers that we and our partners have the pleasure to present over the next ten days will be a fitting celebration of Her Majesty’s 80th year from a grateful music industry.
