An update on the 2021 competition

Published by Ane Wadd-Oseth

The global pandemic of Covid-19 has affected us all and our realities have changed. The Queen Sonja International Music Competition is still aiming to host a great competition in 2021. Our mission remains to support the career development of young singers.

To accommodate possible travel restrictions, the preliminary rounds with 40 selected singers will be completed digitally in June 2021. All 40 selected participants must prepare a video performance of one aria and one Lied, accompanied by piano, which must be sent to the competition within the given deadline.

The competition’s jury will select 12 singers to perform during the semi-final in Oslo. The semi-finalists must register in Oslo on Friday 13 August and the semi-final will take place at the Norwegian Academy of Music on Sunday 15 August.

In addition to cash prizes, exposure to the music industry and exciting concert opportunities, the participants can look forward to masterclasses and extensive career guidance by internationally renowned experts. Six singers will perform arias and duets in the grand finale at the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet on Friday 20 August 2021.

The application deadline is 1 April 2021. All applicants must apply by using the electronic application form, made available from our website. Detailed competition rules can be found here. We open for applications in the beginning of 2021.

We are honoured to welcome all singers born in 1989 or later to apply for the 2021 competition.
